Jim Shimko Senior Manager

Jim Shimko has been working in the dangerous goods field for over 40 years and joined the Labelmaster Services Team in August of 2013. Jim has earned his certifications as a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) from the Scottish Qualifications Authority and, Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP) from the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management. In addition, Jim is part of the Associate Staff at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Institute (DOT TSI).

Jim’s career began in the airline industry in 1979 working for a small commuter airline in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1984, he accepted a position at Delta Air Lines working in the cargo division as a Customer Service Agent. For the next 24 years his career progressed to cover a wide range of responsibilities concerning dangerous goods to include operational and management roles. These responsibilities included: management of dangerous goods strategic plans across all divisions, ensuring divisional policies and procedures met regulatory requirements, acting as technical advisor, conducting investigations and develop comprehensive corrective actions, managing Competent Authority Certificate applications, authoring corporate policy manuals, and a participant at the IATA Dangerous Goods Training Task Force to name a few.

In July of 2008, Jim retired from Delta and accepted a position of General Manager, Operations at DGM USA. Jim served as a technical advisor to DGM’s customer base consisting of freight forwarders, major chemical companies, dangerous goods shippers/manufacturers; facilitating compliance audits and process improvement initiatives, instructing/developing training courses for DOT, ICAO/IATA, IMDG and management of the packaging/crating services.

Since joining Labelmaster Services, Jim has assisted many clients with developing and revising operations to enhance safety, efficiency and compliance. As an instructor, he has facilitated both initial and recurrent courses in 49 CFR, IMDG, and ICAO/IATA domestically and internationally. As a dangerous goods expert, Jim has conducted dangerous goods audits for chemical, service, automotive, and retail industries, as well as transportation carriers worldwide. He has been invited and facilitated presentations at dangerous goods industry events. His advice and facilitation skills have helped clients to develop robust corporate policies to address vulnerabilities, reduce risk, enhance safety, promote compliance and implement continuous improvement.
