Item Description

If you are involved in shipping lithium ion or lithium metal batteries, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires the training specified in 49 CFR Subpart H, Section 172.704. This interactive online course is always up-to-date with the latest regulations and meets the US DOT training requirements for individuals who perform or direct the functions of packaging, marking, labeling, or loading packages containing lithium batteries for shipment by highway, rail, air or vessel. The course covers both excepted and fully regulated lithium batteries.

In this course, you will cover:

  • A definition of what “hazardous materials” are
  • The nine classes of hazardous materials set out in the regulations
  • An overview of what lithium batteries are and why they are potentially hazardous
  • Lithium battery general awareness
  • Packaging and package selection (both UN packaging and non-UN packaging types)
  • Marking, labeling, and documentation requirements
  • Safety, emergency response, and security awareness
  • The shipper’s responsibilities in the transportation process

In the training course will experience:

  • A fully interactive environment, with built-in learning checks and a final exam.
  • A convenient online platform, allowing you to stop at any point and return later to where you left off.
  • Easy record-keeping and a certificate of completion, which is valid for two years from the date you successfully complete the course. The certificate will be saved in your online account and can be e-mailed, downloaded or printed.
  • Access to the course for a ninety-day period (3 month) to complete your training

Although not required, it is strongly recommended that you have a copy of the regulations applicable to your specific shipping needs to maximize your learning experience ( i.e. IATA, 49 CFR, IMDG or ADR).

The estimated average time needed to complete this course ranges from 3 to 4 hours, however, the time needed may vary by student.

If you ship any other hazardous materials or dangerous goods products, you may need additional training. It is the responsibility of your employer to determine what training is required.

New! Interactive 3D Experience

Included with the training course as an additional activity outside the curriculum is a game-like experience that immerses the student into a fun, engaging, realistic warehouse environment where important decisions need to be made… and mistakes have consequences.

In the 3D experience, users will prepare lithium batteries for shipment by ground/vessel or air, as well as select the level of difficulty. From there, they will need to:

  • Locate and review shipping instructions
  • Select the correct outer packaging
  • Assemble packaging per the closure instructions
  • Select and place appropriate labels and markings
  • Select the correct Declaration or Bill of Lading
  • And more

No special gear (headsets, goggles, etc.) or downloads are required for the 3D experience. Our interactive experiences simply require an internet connection and may only be used on a desktop/laptop with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox/Mozilla, and Safari. The experience is NOT supported by Internet Explorer (including IE 11).

You will receive your access link along with your log-in credentials within approximately 2 hours of your purchase. Each user must have a valid email address in order to receive their credentials. Invalid credit card info, missing user info, or freight quote requirements for other items on your order will delay training activation. If purchasing more than 1 course, you will receive all access links in the same email. Please be aware that each link is user specific and should not be used by more than 1 person.

Our online training programs and 3D experiences are fully supported by the latest versions of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox/Mozilla, and Safari and may only be used on a desktop or laptop. Our online training programs no longer support Internet Explorer browsers (including IE 11) since those browsers no longer support the latest web standards. If you are using any version of Internet Explorer as your browser to experience our training programs, there are known issues of logging in, viewing and proceeding through the training, completing the training, and/or receiving your training certificate.
